A terrifying video clip spread of the moment a patient caught fire while being treated with alternative medicine in Thailand, resulting in third-degree burns.
In detail, a Thai model, identified only by her pseudonym “Jim,” went to a clinic to try Thai heat therapy called Phao Ya, which involves burning herbs on her stomach to aid digestion. In footage of the incident, she appeared very comfortable at first, talking to the assistants and smiling as she lay on the bed with a towel and a mixture of herbs on her stomach.
However, when the nurse used a candle lighter to ignite the mixture, the flames almost immediately spread to her clothing and the plastic covering underneath. The video shows her writhing and screaming in pain when she felt fire burning on her skin. It appears that the fire broke out from under the blanket covering her, and spread around her back in the blink of an eye.
She rolled from the bed to the floor while a terrified nurse held her hands, and another tried to put out the fire with a blanket and then a pillow. Shockingly, the doctor retreated to a safe place in the corner while his colleague and the woman’s friend struggled to extinguish the fire.
The assistant used pillows to put out the flames until they were able to control the fire at the clinic in Bangkok, Thailand.
According to local media, in a complaint she submitted to the Thai Ministry of Health on December 4, the woman said: “I have suffered a lot of pain. I am afraid it will affect my work. In another week, I need to work once more, but I still have to Receive treatment in hospital.”
Jim added that she suffered third-degree burns, which led to the appearance of ulcers in most of her back and abdomen, and she had to undergo treatment for two months.
One of the techniques used in Phao Ya is moxibustion, which involves burning a dried herb on specific points along with acupuncture in the abdomen. It is believed to aid digestion.
