According to the ‘2022 Job Administration Statistics Results’ announced by Statistics Korea on the 6th, the number of jobs last year was 26.45 million, an increase of 870,000 (3.4%) from the previous year.
By age group, jobs for those over 60 increased the most, increasing by 440,000. One out of every two jobs added last year is for the elderly.
This was followed by an increase in those in their 50s (260,000 units), those in their 40s (100,000 units), and those in their 30s (50,000 units).
The number of jobs for people in their 20s and younger increased by 10,000 due to population decline. The increase was the smallest among all age groups.
An official from the National Statistical Office explained, “Due to the increase in demand for care, there has been a clear recent increase in jobs in the health and social welfare industries, where many people over 60 are employed.”
Among the total 26.45 million jobs, those in their 50s accounted for the largest share at 24.0% (6.35 million).
For the first time since statistics were compiled in 2016, it surpassed those in their 40s and ranked first. This is an effect of the aging population, including an increase in the average age of those employed.
This was followed by those in their 40s at 23.8% (6.31 million units) and those in their 30s at 20.0% (5.28 million units).

When looking at gender, the size of the jobs themselves is mostly for men, but the increase was noticeable for women.
The number of jobs occupied by men is 14.99 million (56.7%), which is 1.31 times the number of jobs occupied by women (11.46 million (43.3%)).
Compared to the previous year, the number of jobs for women increased by 450,000 (4.1%), a larger increase than the 420,000 jobs for men (2.9%).
In particular, when the number of jobs for men in their 30s increased by 4,000, the number of jobs for women in their 30s increased by 50,000.
By industry, the health and social welfare industry and the wholesale and retail industry showed the largest increase, increasing by 120,000 and 110,000, respectively. Manufacturing and information and communication industries also increased by 90,000.
On the other hand, the finance and insurance industry decreased by 10,000 due to the shift to an online focus.
The manufacturing sector has the largest number of jobs at 5.07 million (19.2%). This was followed by wholesale and retail at 3.28 million (12.4%), health and social welfare at 2.53 million (9.6%), and construction at 2.17 million (8.2%).

By company size, there was an increase of 620,000 in small and medium-sized businesses. The number of non-profit companies and large corporations increased by 150,000 and 100,000, respectively.
The average tenure of a job is in the following order: large corporations (7.9 years), non-profit corporations (7.7 years), and small and medium-sized enterprises (3.9 years).
The average age was highest in that order: small and medium-sized businesses (47.7 years old), non-profit companies (47.6 years old), and large corporations (42.1 years old). The overall average age was 46.8 years old, slightly higher than 46.4 years in 2021.
Among last year’s jobs, 20 million (75.6%) continued to be occupied by the same workers as the previous year, and 3.03 million (11.5%) were jobs replaced by workers due to retirement or job change.
The number of new jobs created through the creation of companies and business expansion was 3.42 million (12.9%), and the number of lost jobs due to company extinction or business reduction was 2.55 million.
A job refers to an employment position occupied by a worker and is a different concept from employment. For example, if a person works at a company during the week and works as an instructor at an academy on the weekends, there is only one person employed but two jobs.
