The separation of the two contractual partners did not happen as amicably as Dorna Sports SL and the CryptoDATA founders Ovidiu Toma and Bogdan Maruntins presented the abrupt termination of their partnership in a joint statement today.
Because CryptoDATA CEO Toma assessed the situation ten days ago at the Valencia GP as very confident of victory. «I read confusing information in the media that our team had been sold. But our team has not been sold. We have a valid contract with Dorna and IRTA until the end of 2026. It has not been broken and we are not in danger of breaking it. We have a contract with Aprilia Racing and the drivers for the coming season. Razlan Razali also did not sell his shares because if he wanted to do that, we would have to agree to sell his shares. And we have a right of first refusal. So Razlan mightn’t have sold anything to an American investor. I’m really curious regarding what’s behind these stories.”
24 hours later, the “MotoGP Participation Committee” (consisting of Dorna, IRTA and FIM) withdrew the racing company RNF Racing Limited’s right to participate in the 2024 World Cup. On the same day (November 27th), Aprilia terminated the two-year contract halfway through. As a result, the RNF company essentially lost its business basis.
According to Toma, Dorna has agreed to pay the Romanians financial compensation for their exit following the differences of the last few weeks.
This avoids legal proceedings, during which the two slots probably might not have been awarded to Trackhouse Racing due to the legal uncertainty.
“Dorna, IRTA and the RNF MotoGP team resolve their differences,” was the headline of today’s joint press release from Dorna and RNF.
We would like to spare our readers the mutual verbal caresses and appreciations of the two parties to the dispute. It was assured that the differences of opinion that arose in the last part of the 2023 season were resolved amicably.
Ovidiu Toma explained to SPEEDWEEK.com on November 26th, 2023: “We have invested 7 million euros in the team this year in good faith for the benefit of the championship. I’m disappointed to have ended up in a paddock where business is done the old-fashioned way. We live in 2023. You would think that everything would be negotiated collectively and contracts should be respected. But I sense behavior that reminds me of a dictatorship.”
The two CryptoDATA managers Toma and Maruntis sometimes deal with the truth sparingly. Bogdan Maruntis in today’s press release: «It was never CryptoDATA’s intention to be involved in the sporting side of the RNF team, because that is not our field of activity. But we saw an opportunity to be more involved in motorsports and therefore decided to stand alongside the RNF team. CryptoDATA has currently achieved all planned business and marketing goals. Now we’re back to focusing on our main goals in the technology industry.”
CryptoDATA CEO Ovidiu Toma announced on November 4th, 2022 at a press conference in front of more than 100 people at the Valencia GP: “We want to fight for podium places in two or three years.”
And CryptoDATA strategist Bogdan Maruntis trumpeted publicly a year ago: “We have an unlimited contract with RNF, our planning currently extends until 2026. But the cooperation will extend beyond this point in time, because we are partners, shareholders and friends. »
It doesn’t sound like CryptoDATA never wanted to get involved in the sporting and operational side of MotoGP. You probably didn’t buy the 60 percent share in the racing team by mistake.
The RNF team has achieved four top-five results this year, but no podium finishes. So were all planned goals still achieved?
Contradictions upon contradictions.
“We don’t owe anyone any money,” Ovidiu Toma repeated like a prayer wheel today.
«Dorna made a big mistake because they disqualified us, even though our MotoGP contract with RNF was valid until the end of 2026. We have now received compensation so that we can refrain from any legal dispute once morest Dorna. So in the end, Dorna paid us to accept the withdrawal,” Toma told SPEEDWEEK.com today, which didn’t sound particularly amicable. «It’s not the case that we owe anyone money. Yes, and we also agreed on the naming rights for the Austrian GP. I repeat: We have never owed anyone any money. We don’t have any debts. That’s why we deserve fair, neutral reporting. We didn’t make any mistakes. That’s why Dorna paid us to avoid a legal dispute.”
The performance of the capable CryptoDATA managers following twelve months as team members, GP naming rights buyers and sponsors can only be praised highly for several reasons.
1.) Didn’t achieve a podium finish with five-time MotoGP winner Oliveira.
2.) Completely at odds with 40% RNF partner and ex-team principal Razlan Razali. Although he was described as a friend twelve months ago, an (independent?) internal audit is now examining whether the Malaysian has exceeded his financial authority.
3.) Dumped by Aprilia Racing and Dorna following one year.
4.) The already excellent reputation of Romanian entrepreneurs was further improved to an almost unbearable extent.
5.) Apparently at least two dozen team members were not paid their salaries for the countless hours of work with three Grand Prix in November.
6.) Emerged from the dispute with Dorna as the shining winner. The loss of the two precious MotoGP slots is easy to bear following this magnificent triumph.
7.) In terms of compliance, unprecedented quality was ensured.
8.) Despite the limited appearance in MotoGP, CryptoDATA can look back on a successful performance on all levels.
9.) Given the low investment of 7 million euros, the Romanians almost got the indescribable image boost for the respected company for free.
10.) When Jorge Martin and Aleix Espargaró are asked whether their CryptoDATA personal sponsorship deals are paid on time, they usually roll their eyes.
