The Constitutional Court of Peru ordered this Tuesday the release of the former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), despite the fact that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IDC) ordered otherwise last year.

“This Constitutional Court orders that the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) and the director of the Barbadillo Prison (where he remains imprisoned), on the same day, order the immediate release of the favored person, Alberto Fujimori,” reads an order from the TC.

In an unappealable ruling, the magistrates They restored the pardon they had granted to Fujimori in 2017 for humanitarian reasons, and which was later revoked by the Supreme Court in 2019.

85 years old, Fujimori suffers from various health problems, such as tongue cancer, atrial fibrillation, lung disease and hypertension.

Since 2009, Fujimori has been serving a sentence for “crimes once morest humanity” in the Barbadillo prison, a small prison for former presidents east of Lima, for the death of 25 people in two massacres perpetrated in 1991-1992 by an army squad.
