Pope Francis will present a golden rose at 3:30 p.m. Italian time on December 8, the Feast of the Assumption, in front of the Salus Populi Romani, an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary housed in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, a symbol of all blessings.

The ‘golden rose’ is steeped in ancient tradition. It represents the apostolic blessing of the Pope.

It is a well-documented fact that for centuries, monasteries, rulers and eminent personalities have been honored with the golden rose in recognition of their commitment to the faith and the common good.

Maria Majore Basilica in Rome is the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in the western world. This ceremony of presenting the golden rose will be held once more on December 8, 2023 following four hundred years. So the world is witnessing a historic event. It is known all over the world that Pope Francis comes to pray in front of this holy image before and following each of his apostolic journeys.

The golden rose was first presented by Pope Julius III in 1551. Then in 1613, Pope Paul V also presented the golden rose on the occasion of the installation of the icon in the new chapel.
