MR Campaign Strategy: Targeting Flemish Strongholds and N-VA in Wallonia-Brussels Federation Municipal Elections

2023-12-05 17:07:00

In total, 131 panels will be erected throughout the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Particularly in Hainaut and the province of Liège, that is to say in the two major Walloon demographic strongholds where the PS and the PTB are powerful. Expected duration of display: around ten days.

Also in Flanders

The originality of this campaign, apart from the logic of left-right polarization which underlies it, is that it will also take place…. in Flanders. Not in the same way, of course. The MR does not line up electoral lists in the north of the country. But the Blues still want to send a message to the Flemings. In particular, in the Antwerp region.

Georges-Louis Bouchez’s strategy: seducing Flanders

A media “stunt” is also planned for this Wednesday. “There will be no poster,” explains a liberal source, “but rather a cyclist pulling a trailer with a message in Dutch. It will pass through the emblematic and strategic streets of Antwerp and in front of the City Hall.”

Why do you want to send a message to Dutch speakers? First of all, we must remember the national ambitions of the president of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez. The latter is very present in the Flemish press and is officially running for the post of Prime Minister. “The campaign which is starting is part of an approach which has existed for three years now within the MR and aimed at ensuring a media presence in Flanders”, explains a liberal.

The MR wants to remind voters in the north of the country that there are not only left-wing parties in Wallonia and Brussels, but also a center-right party: the MR. In this way, the Reform Movement hopes to profile itself as “the” French-speaking partner of reference for a future federal majority.

Finally, spreading a political message in Antwerp also targets Bart De Wever, the mayor of the Flemish metropolis. The one who is also president of the N-VA does not want the MR of Georges-Louis Bouchez, considered too unitarian, and dreams of forming an alliance with the PS in order to move Belgian institutions towards confederalism. “We hope to change the mentality internally at the N-VA on this subject,” explains an MR.

Coming back to the campaign launched by the Liberals on the French-speaking side, it will be completed in mid-January by a new operation presenting the faces of the party for the elections. The heads of the list and/or lesser-known faces? The question is not yet resolved, we are told.
