Understanding Hearing Loss in French Society: Survey Results and Solutions

2023-12-05 14:06:41

Ecouter Voir is today publishing the results of a survey* at its request carried out by Ifop, which takes stock of the declared rates of deafness, the perception of the deficit in French society and the difficulties of the hearing impaired.

22% of those questioned said they suffered from hearing loss – a figure close to the epidemiological assessment established by Inserm. Barely more than half of them (52%) consulted a doctor on this subject (20% took no action. 44% carried out a hearing assessment and 29% had a hearing aid fitted.

70% of people declaring they have a hearing loss say they are particularly embarrassed during group conversations, such as at end-of-year parties (62%) or evenings with music. They also have difficulty when watching television (55%) or, to a lesser extent, on the phone (46%).

Logically, more than half of those surveyed have at least one loved one affected by hearing loss. The 54% in question invite this person to consult a specialist (44%) and/or to be tested (26%). 85% of French people believe that a hearing assessment should be systematically offered from the age of 50. Almost all (94%) say that hearing aids are a way to combat social isolation and 7 out of 10 think that people wearing hearing aids are not stigmatized.

“We are witnessing a real change in mentalities, comments Arthur Havis, Managing Director of Listen to View. Where a few years ago, hearing aids were a factor of stigmatization and social isolation, today they are a real means of inclusion for people suffering from hearing loss. We are on the right track but there is still a way to go before everyone affected by hearing loss gets a hearing aid. »

In fact, 90% of survey respondents consider hearing aids to be expensive devices. And if 63% of French people have heard of 100% health, only 28% are able to give an exact definition.

* Quantitative online study, self-administered as part of the Omnibus by Ifop, with 2 representative national samples: 1006 individuals aged 18 and over (from February 8 to 10, 2023), 1003 individuals aged 18 years and over (September 20 to 22, 2023).
