Detroit now has America’s first wireless charging route, powering vehicles on the move.
Electreon has already installed wireless charging routes in Europe and the Middle East. Detroit is the first city in the United States to have this technology.
The induction charging lane extends a quarter mile, just 400 meters, on 14th Street near Michigan Central. Of course, it’s not much, but the innovation is exceptional enough that those responsible for overseeing the project have rightly described it as « futur du transport ».
The operation is very simple on paper. Coils placed under the asphalt charge vehicles as they cross it. The same system as when you place your smartphone on an induction charging port but a little more complex. In fact, your phone is stationary and in contact with the terminal, which is absolutely not the case of a car isolated from the road by its tires and in motion!

This ceremony allowed Electreon, the manufacturer of the new technology, to demonstrate real-time charging. Two components are required for wireless charging to work, one in the ground and the other on the vehicle. The coils are laid under the asphalt before being connected to a management unit, which Electreon describes as the “brains” that can provide power to the road. Meanwhile, a receiver attached to the bottom of the vehicle is connected to its battery. When the vehicle drives on the coils, they directly power the battery.
The great advantage of this system is that it allows smaller batteries to be installed in vehicles while increasing their autonomy. Less battery weight, therefore less consumption and above all use of raw materials! The infrastructure would be useful not only for electric cars, but especially for delivery trucks and urban public transport.
