This Tuesday, the results of a new PISA survey are revealed. This survey evaluates the performance of students from 79 countries around the world and according to the latest findings, dating from 2018, French-speaking Belgian students are not very good. The liberal specifies: “I heard the Minister of Education (Editor’s note: Caroline Désir) talk a lot regarding kindness, I think that the best kindness is not to let children pass who do not have the level, it is rather to support them so that they can reach this level.” He keeps on: “This is why we propose that from primary three onwards, all children know how to read, write and count. That we can evaluate it with an external evaluation and if that is not the case, to have the necessary support to get back up to speed. There is no point in continuing your studies if you have gaps in basic learning.“
He believes that the poor PISA results reflect a “mentality“: “In all policies, there is a lack of notions of evaluation and excellence.” He also says it’s not regarding the money: “We have one of the best funded education systems in developed countries.” He concludes: “We must not hand over money, but stop administrative overload and return to basic knowledge. It’s all very well to tell a child that they need to develop their ability to think, but if they don’t have the basic skills, it’s like playing football without a ball.”
