The sports friends from Kazakhstan were guests at the Lower Austria Sports Center on Sunday. The first meeting of this EWHL season was narrowly won, and an exciting game was expected. The record champions also offered free beer, but the St. Pölten fans don’t really want to get going. The crowd was also disappointing for this big game. Top ice hockey was once once more offered in this top-class international league.
The St. Pölten women also took the lead twice. After a goalless first third, the moment finally arrived in the middle of the second. Lena-Maria Artner scored following a wonderful combination. But the guests didn’t hesitate for long and managed to equalize in the second half.
In the second half of the game it was the Kazakhs who repeatedly had to play outnumbered following some stupid mistakes and this continued in the final third. But the St. Pölten women did not understand how to capitalize on this advantage. And when Alexandra Gowie finally made it 2-1, Almaty managed to equalize once more in the same minute. It wasn’t until the last time penalty once morest Almaty, one and a half minutes before the end, that the St. Pölten team really picked up steam. However, a chance and then a double chance immediately followingwards cannot be exploited. And so it goes into overtime, in which there are only four women on the field. There were only three of the Kazakhs for the first half minute because the penalty had to be served, but the St. Pölten women were unable to take advantage of this phase at all. On the contrary, when the Kazakhs are complete once more, the puck is played far forward, and captain Charlotte Wittich, of all people, loses control when stopping it with her hand and the outstanding legionnaire from Almaty can run towards the goal alone and St. Pölten’s strong goalkeeper Magdalena Defeating Luggin a third time.
The Sabers now have to go to the Lakers Carinthia on Sunday, then there will be a longer break until January 13th. Only then is the next home game once morest EC Graz, which is the second-best Austrian team with one more game, four points behind the St. Pölten team as seventh. The Sabers are currently in fifth place in the table. The Lakers are six points behind but have a game fewer than the Sabres. Katowice leads ahead of HK Budapest, Bratislava and Almaty.
