Mustangs vs. Marlin: Virginia Wesleyan Wins Women’s Basketball Match

Virginia Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team breezed to a 61-24 victory Monday night over Mid-Atlantic Christian at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach.

Logan Carter scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added four steals. Jada Norman had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Mekayla Clarke had seven points and three steals.

Carly James had team highs of 10 rebounds and six points for the Mustangs (0-5) from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, who had lost each of their previous four games by at least 74 points.

VWU (3-4) next will play at Averett at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

West Virginia 83, No. 25 Penn State 65: Former Lake Taylor High star JJ Quinerly scored 22 points to lead the Mountaineers (8-0) over the Lions (7-2) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Quinerly hit 8 of 18 shots from the field and 5 of 7 free throws. She had four rebounds, three steals and two assists for WVU, which broke a 29-29 tie with a 12-0 second-quarter run and remained ahead.

Tay Valladay scored 18 for PSU.

No. 4 Purdue 87, Iowa 68: Zach Edey scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds as Purdue bounced back from its first loss of the season with a home victory. Edey hit 9 of 10 shots and 7 of 9 free throws while sitting out much of the second half.

Lance Jones added 17 points for Purdue, playing its first game since a 92-88 overtime loss to Northwestern on Friday. Ben Krikke led the Hawkeyes with 16 points, but they trailed 45-24 at halftime and by as many as 35 in the second half.
