Creg Approved Financing Costs for Public Service Obligations – Impact on Energy Bills in Belgium

Creg approved the financing costs submitted by Elia for next year’s public service obligations. These costs do not concern the rates charged by Elia for the construction and management of the high voltage network, which will increase in the years to come.

Rather, these are the costs that Elia bears for various tasks imposed by the government on the network manager, such as the purchase and sale of green certificates and the pylon tax in Flanders, for example. These are set each year and it is up to the Creg to judge whether they are justified.

After the regulator’s approval of Elia’s costs, Belgian households will see their energy bill reduce slightly in 2024. The manager has calculated that supplements in Flanders will drop from around 1.9 to 0, 9 euros per megawatt hour. For an average household, this represents a saving of 3 euros per year. In the south of the country, the savings will be a little greater, with a reduction in the supplement from 11 euros to 6.3 euros, or at least 15 euros less per year for an average household.
