A 37-year-old appeared before the St. Pölten regional court on Monday because she is said to have killed her two daughters in Absdorf (Tulln district) on July 24th. The public prosecutor’s office has requested that the woman be placed in a forensic therapeutic center. According to a report, the affected person suffers from a mental disorder and similar acts are likely. According to defense attorney Astrid Wagner, her client is said to have acted deliriously.
The woman is said to have drowned her daughters when they were seven years old and almost six months old. The crime was recorded on video. The woman then allegedly drove her car into a tree. Today she can remember the incident “rather vaguely,” said the 37-year-old. When asked how she envisioned her future, she said she wanted to go through the measure and then build a new life.
The woman suffers from psychotic depression, anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. “So far there has been no significant progress in therapy,” said expert Peter Hofmann. The 37-year-old has a serious, lasting disorder. It is very likely that she will carry out similar actions in the foreseeable future.
The expert spoke of a “very rare phenomenon”. Psychosis causes you to lose touch with reality, he explained. The 37-year-old has been suffering from “terrible obsessive thoughts” and fears for around 15 years. She received psychiatric treatment for the first time in 2019. The woman suffered from depression and began to question everything. “The puzzle in which she lived has become more and more complete,” said the expert.
The 37-year-old was very worried regarding her daughters and felt like a failure. She didn’t take some of her medication and was treated in a day clinic. “The system did everything it might to help her,” said the expert. On the day of the crime, the possibility of free will was no longer present and the woman was not mentally competent. A long disease process “escalated within a short period of time.”
The jury retired for deliberations shortly before 10:15 a.m. There are two main questions to be answered regarding murder and additional questions regarding insanity.
