At least eleven people have died in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia. Three survivors had been rescued, local search and rescue forces said on Monday. At the time of the eruption, 75 mountaineers were in the area. 49 climbers were evacuated from the area and many were being treated for burns.
The 2,891 meter high volcano erupted on Sunday, throwing ash up to three kilometers into the air. Video footage showed a huge ash cloud stretching far into the sky, as well as cars and roads covered in ash. Indonesia lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and has 127 active volcanoes, according to the volcanology agency. A popular tourist volcano off New Zealand’s east coast, also on the Ring of Fire, erupted in 2019, killing more than 20 people.
