ANearby, the IDF’s blind offensive on Gaza has resumed with a vengeance, with the stated and assumed objective of destroying Hamas. At what price ? At the cost of the blood of many innocent people: men, children, women, cynically considered as collateral damage.
The incessant calls from the international community change nothing: Israel continues its blind revenge following the attacks perpetrated by Hamas on its territory on October 7. Without proposing a political solution.
Destroying Hamas, if Israel can do it, is one thing. The settlement of the Palestinian question, in accordance with the resolutions of international legality, including an independent State with Eastern Al-Quds as its capital, is another. However, until now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s only obsession is to raise arms, knowingly omitting the political solution likely to guarantee lasting peace in the region.
The problem will therefore remain unresolved, even following the supposed annihilation of Hamas.
Political inintelligence
The strategy currently adopted by Israel plants, at most, the seeds of future violence. Because it is not by indiscriminately killing Palestinians and continuing to deprive them of their legitimate rights that it will put an end to this conflict. This comes from a form of political inintelligence.
At the end of this Hamas-Israel war, which will leave painful imprints on entire generations, the meager prospects for resolving this conflict will melt like snow in the sun. The differences and resentments will be too great to hope to smoke the peace pipe.
Even before this war, the situation was complex. Negotiations to achieve a lasting solution oscillated between hope and disillusionment, timid progress and discouraging setbacks. Borders, the status of Jerusalem and the right of return of Palestinian refugees… are all themes that resonate like echoes of a history marked by immeasurable suffering.
Even today, these questions are not simply lines drawn on a map, but historical scars, wounds still raw.
The idea of a two-state solution, while noble, faces unhealthy Israeli political arithmetic, once morest a backdrop of deep-rooted suspicions and decades of animosity.
The right of return of Palestinian refugees, far from being simply a political question, carries the weight of a human tragedy. It also raises major political concerns, being seen as a direct threat to the existence of the State of Israel.
Guaranteeing Israel’s security adds further complexity to this conflict.
Today, more than ever, it seems that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not simply a diplomatic quest: it is a moral and humanitarian requirement. Peace in this region of the world should not be an unattainable dream, but a priority objective of the international community. Every day of inaction is another day of suffering for the Palestinians, who live in the shadow of this discord and endure this conflict as a perpetual sentence.
Peaceful cohabitation should not be a distant ideal, but a daily reality. For this to happen, Israel must comply with international legality and subscribe to the two-state solution. To definitively put an end to the muffled cries of the children of Gaza. To the suffering of the Palestinians. To lives shattered by decades of bullying, humiliation and deprivation.
