Thiruvananthapuram ∙ Economist, teacher and Dalit thinker Dr. M. Kunhaman (74) was found dead at his house in Srikariyam Venchamood, Srinagar. Yesterday evening, when his friends called him, there was no response, and when he reached home, he went to the back and found him lying dead in the dining room. The house is locked from inside. Kunjaman was alone at home as his wife was in Malappuram for treatment. Daughter abroad. The police reached the spot and registered a case of unnatural death.
Dr. Acquaintances said that Kunjaman had physical disabilities. He was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 2021 for his autobiography ‘Ethir’, which describes the caste discrimination he faced, but he turned it down. He was a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Kerala. Also served as member of UGC. He resigned from the University of Kerala in 2006 and became a lecturer at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Maharashtra.
Pattambi Vatanamkurishi hails from Palakkad. He passed MA from Calicut University in 1974 with first rank. He is the first Dalit student to get the first rank following KR Narayan who was the President. Later he did research under Dr. K. N. Raj at the Center for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram.
The Chief Minister expressed his condolences
In his condolence message, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that M. Kunjaman was a genius who overcame adverse social conditions with determination. Noted for his original understandings and opinions, this economist had his own vision for the development of Kerala. His autobiography, “Vakti”, which has been noticed in many ways as a teacher with a large number of disciples, a writer, etc., has become a reflection of the realities of life. The Chief Minister said that this separation is a big loss for Kerala.
