At ReCycleMoi in Roubaix, bicycles in poor condition are repaired on an assembly line and resold at low prices

Newly installed in Roubaix within Tissel, a brand new third place dedicated to the circular economy, the ReCycleMoi workshop already has its work cut out for it. There is no shortage of bikes, especially in poor condition.

“A study dating from 2018 estimated that 1.2 million bicycles were thrown away each year in France. Brought down to the perimeter of Nord and Pas-de-Calais, that’s 70,000 bicycles per year. We find them everywhere, in recycling centers, cellars, vacant lots…” describes Antoine Garandeau, co-director, with Simon Debussche, of ReCycleMoi.

Resold at low prices to partner workshops

These bicycles, more or less rolling, many end up in the hands of participatory workshops which have flourished in recent years in the Lille metropolis, such as the Bus à Biclou, Les Mains dans le Guidon, or Roues Libres. But often, they vegetate there, due to lack of available hands and time. These structures have therefore joined forces within Recycle-moi, to pool collection and give repairs an industrial dimension, the objective being to reach 10,000 bicycles repaired per year by 2025.

“On average, we collect 10 bikes to repair 6. We recover the spare parts, and all the recoverable parts are offered to partners, in a logic of circularity,” explains Antoine Garandeau.

The repaired bicycles are resold at a low price to partner workshops, or to recycling centers, to be offered on the second-hand market, with guaranteed servicing. The objective is also the creation of jobs, particularly for people in reintegration. Six people already work in the workshop.
