The Jürgen Conings Case: Hunter Sentenced for Circulating Body Images and Firearms Offenses

2023-12-01 11:27:32

The 67-year-old hunter who circulated images of the body of far-right ex-soldier Jürgen Conings in the media, in 2021, was sentenced to two months in prison by the Tongeren criminal court and received a fine of 2,000 euros.

His trial, held at the end of October, concerned threats made once morest four people who were looking for him, a number of offenses relating to firearms legislation, as well as harassment of close to the ex-soldier. In addition to the prison sentence and fine for stalking Conings’ family, he also received a fine of 2,400 euros for possession of weapons.

The most wanted person in Belgium

On June 20, 2021, the hunter discovered the lifeless body of Jürgen Conings, a soldier who became the most wanted person in Belgium a month following stealing an arsenal of weapons from the Bourg-Léopold barracks and threatening several politicians and virologists . The hunter then filmed the scene and sent the video to Jürgen Conings’ family.

This news also reached certain journalists, including one working for the German tabloid “Bild”. The hunter had agreed with the latter that he would obtain the images following Jürgen Conings’ funeral, and only if the family gave their consent. The journalist, authorized by the hunter to write down his email address in his cell phone, however, sent the images to himself without authorization before publishing them. The hunter was not prosecuted by the prosecution for the distribution of the images, but because the publication of them had “disturbed the tranquility of the Conings family”.

He had stolen a submachine gun

The FN P90 submachine gun stolen by Conings not having been immediately found near the body, a search was then carried out at the hunter’s home. A pile of ammunition and other modified weapons had been found there – modifications that did not comply with firearms laws.

The hunter was, however, acquitted by the Tongeren criminal court for having committed a traffic offense and threatened four men in 2020. That year, he had overtaken a tow truck with his tractor, and under the pretext that the driver of the tow truck was traveling with its high beams on, the hunter had thrown stones at the vehicle. The repairman, having called three friends in the meantime, then pursued the hunter to his home, where the men allegedly had another altercation. The sixty-year-old then allegedly showed a fake weapon and threatened to use it.
