Thursday evening, a high-speed chase began in Flanders, somewhere north of Brussels. An individual, driving a likely stolen SUV, was chased by the police. He rushed towards the south of the country, trying to outrun the police vehicle which was sticking to him without letting go. Arriving on the R3, the big ring of Charleroi, following having driven – we were told – at more than 200 km/h, he tried to take the “Mont-sur-Marchienne” exit at full speed.

There, at the end of the ramp, heavy concrete blocks block his path. The SUV apparently stalled, but arrived too quickly and crossed rue de Bomerée, perpendicular to the R3, leaving tire marks on the ground. The SUV hit the barrier on the other side of the road, going airborne before landing heavily and beginning to roll several times.

The SUV finally ended its mad course on the roof below. Police officers from the northern Brussels patrol got out of their vehicle to extract the individual from the damaged car, which began to catch fire.

Police from the local areas of Charleroi and Germinalt, as well as the WPR, arrived as reinforcements, quickly joined by firefighters from the Hainaut-Est rescue zone for the burning SUV. Handcuffed and arrested, the individual was taken away. The federal road police (WPR) had to close part of the R3 as well as the area around the Mont-sur-Marchienne exit while they prepared the report.
