Combatting School Bullying: KIVA Program Expansion in Wallonia-Brussels Federation

2023-12-01 06:13:20

The KIVA program has already attracted attention elsewhere than in Finland, the toolbox has been exported to 22 countries around the world, notably in France, Italy, Spain and Argentina. At the beginning of the week, the Minister of Education went to Finland and she brought back in her suitcases, KIVA for our primary schools. “There is no miracle program, but what is interesting is to be able to combine several approaches and for schools to feel comfortable with the tools we offer them. What matters to us is that schools take action to fight once morest school bullying and that they all do it. We have been doing things in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation since 2015, but we now need to shift into second gear and that schools seize this problem which can sometimes lead to tragedies. This is of great concern to the students, parents and teachers who are part of the school community and we, for our part, must help schools to tackle this problem.”, explains Caroline Désir.

From the next school year

In the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, there are already around twenty schools that are KIVA schools. The idea is to expand this program to as many primary schools as possible, in waves, little by little from the next school year on a voluntary basis. To implement this program in our schools, KIVA will be entrusted to the non-profit University of Peace whose mission is to create or maintain a climate of peace. “We will be responsible for training educational staff in the broad sense at the school. This includes management, teachers, but also receptionists and educators. We will train them for 2 years to lead these KIVA sessions and create within their school, group cohesion, to communicate differently and also understand the pressures linked to the group “explains Esther Alcala Recuerda – KIVA Trainer – University of Peace.

The Wallonia-Brussels Federation is also setting up a School Climate Observatory whose objective will be to coordinate the different approaches put in place to fight once morest school bullying, but also to be able to study it in French-speaking Belgium. “The School Climate Observatory is a new administrative service which will allow schools to have a common framework with scientific monitoring. We will offer them spaces for exchange between professionals to equip themselves with the most appropriate programs depending on their situation, develops Simona Lastrego – Director of the School Climate Observatory.

Next year, nearly 400 will take part in the broad plan to combat school bullying of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. A program that also goes hand in hand with the Pact for Teaching Excellence.
