Vladimir Putin Urges Russian Women to Have 8 or More Children: Changing Family Norms in Russia

2023-12-01 07:03:10

Moscow: President Vladimir Putin said that women in Russia should give birth to at least eight children and a large family should be the norm. Putin’s call for women to bear more children to compensate for the losses comes following several Russian soldiers were killed during the war in Ukraine. But Putin did not directly mention the deaths of Russian soldiers.

Putin was addressing the World Russian People’s Council in Moscow. The birth rate in Russia has been declining since the 1990s. It is believed that more than 300,000 Russian soldiers were killed in the Ukraine war that started last February. Putin also stated that increasing the population is the most important goal of Russia.

At one time, our grandmothers of previous generations gave birth to up to seven children. Sometimes more children were born. The generations that followed continued to do so. That legacy must return. Big family should be our standard. The lifestyle of the Russian people must change. The family is not only the foundation of the country and society, but also a spiritual phenomenon and a source of morality.-Putin pointed out.

Putin also reminded that our future goal should be to increase the population. The event was organized by the Russian Orthodox Church. People from many traditional communities of Russia came to participate in the event. The Independent reported that the population of Russia as of January 1, 2023 was 146,447,424. Putin was first elected president in 1999. It is very less compared to the population of that time. That is what Putin mentioned.
