The last European Diabetology Congress raised the alarm regarding a growing global burden: prediabetes.
Let us first point out that “diabetes” refers to two completely different diseases. A serious autoimmune disease called type 1 diabetes (T1D) and a very common civilization disease, linked to excess sugar consumption, called type 2 diabetes (T2D). The retention of the same name for two such dissimilar diseases is one of the aberrations which can only be explained by interests having nothing to do with clinical science.
When the media or doctors talk regarding diabetes without mentioning the number, they always mention T2D, because it represents 95% of the whole.
Initially, the diagnosis of T2DM was made for a fasting blood sugar level greater than 1.4 g/l. Then this rate rose to 1.2g/l, suddenly doubling the number of diabetics in the world.
T2DM occurs when insulin is no longer able to cope with excess sugar consumption. It all starts with insulin resistance, now detectable, which we call prediabetes. What an extraordinary discovery: diseases incubate before being detectable. So we all have pre-deafness, pre-impotence, pre-Alzheimer’s, even pre-cancer.
But we can detect prediabetes even much earlier by observing sugar consumption which has increased from 7 kg per year per person in the Middle Ages to 30 to 100 kg today.
The conference participants estimated that 20% of prediabetes will develop into T2DM within 5 years. Who might have believed it? They ventured a forecast of 10% prediabetics in the population in 2045. This seems very low given the consumption of sodas and other sweets consumed at all ages and for no reason.
Bubble tea is a new, very sweet drink with a market forecast of €5 billion annually. The market for antidiabetics being much higher, laboratories can afford scholarly conferences, while soda merchants can only afford television advertisements. Fortunately for the business, the biggest soda drinkers are also the most telephiles and the most learned diabetologists are also the most congress attendees.
Congress is finally frightened to see unconscious countries that do not screen for prediabetes. These same countries probably do not know how to better detect pre-diarrhea, pre-malaria and pre-tuberculosis which will kill 6 million people each year.
The trivial publications of these sponsored conferences meet the criteria required to be published by scientific journals. A feat of medical marketing consisting of flouting common sense without truly corrupting science. No complaints. Even the WHO endorses these reports.
Have you noticed that the verb “to last” has disappeared from the media? Today, despite our zapping society, everything “endures”.
Can humanity survive following the discovery of prediabetes?
