This is called winning the day. For his first table poker tournament, Julien Demeude, 25, won his place in the final of the Winamax Poker Tour 2024 scheduled in Paris (Seine-Saint-Denis), from Tuesday March 12 to Sunday March 17, 2024.
What is the World Poker Tour?
The Winamax World Poker Tour (WiPT) is one of the flagship events of the French poker and sports betting company. “It’s a national circuit which includes 11 stages throughout France,” begins Alexandre Barthélémy, from the July29 Sports Management agency. “From October 28, 2023 to March 10, 2024, players participate in tournaments to win free participation in the Paris final. The winner of the final wins the honorary title of best French poker player. »
In Nantes, Julien Demeude competed with 964 players. “It’s a record for a regional stage,” continues the agency representative.
180 people win the right to participate in this tournament for free out of more than 10,000 players. In total, one million euros will be shared between the best participants, including €150,000 promised to the winner. “I don’t know at all what I will do with it, but I prefer not to think regarding it so as not to put pressure on myself,” laughs Julien Demeude.
Two-day qualifying poker tournament
The resident of Condé-sur-Sarthe (Orne) won one of the two tickets up for grabs in Nantes, Saturday November 18 and Sunday November 19, 2023.
Enough to allow him to compete for free in Paris for the final next year, instead of paying the €500 entry fee. “I felt more adrenaline than pressure. I went there to discover and play as I usually play. At worst, I knew I might go to the qualifying tournament in Caen. »
The event, contested over two days, required concentration and patience.
For Saturday, we started at 11 a.m. and played until 7 p.m. It started once more on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We took a break every 2 hours for 1 hour.

Good atmosphere
Eliminated for the first time on Saturday at 3 p.m., the poker player took advantage of the second tournament organized at 4:30 p.m., the same day, for competitors who lost quickly.
Julien Demeude then enjoyed a prolific start on Sunday. “I made two big shots that allowed me to win a lot of chips and from then on it was a lot of patience. »
Because as Ornais tells us, the way of playing is not the same as that observed online. “There are a lot fewer bluffers at the table than online. Players do less nonsense. »

If the bettors are more serious, the climate remains relaxed. “The players didn’t hesitate to ask questions and as we didn’t have a dealer, it was up to us to deal so you always had a minimum of trading. Plus, everyone eliminated was applauded so it was a really pleasant setting. »
Connected every day
To prepare to meet professional players, Julien Demeude will participate in one or two preparatory table tournaments in parallel with those carried out daily online.
I participate in one or two tournaments every day. It’s between 2 and 5 euros for each session and each lasts between 2 hours and 4 hours.

The Condéen has been connecting online for two years now, alongside his work at Leclerc Drive in Alençon. “I finish work at 12 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. so that gives me time to play. »
The Norman learns on the job, with one of his friends whom he meets on the networks. “At the table, you have to be patient above all. Do not try to bluff every time and carefully observe the game and your opponents on the way they bet and raise. »
All that remains is to hope to pocket the €150,000 in March 2024.
