Harry Potter fans know that celebrating the saga of the scarred wizard goes well beyond fiction. In Scotland, for example, it is possible to board the train which serves as the Hogwarts Express and which passes exactly the same place as what we see in the films. Unfortunately, this attraction may well close its doors.
An iconic attraction
If you’re having trouble accepting that you’ll never receive your Hogwarts acceptance letter, know that there are many ways to pretend you’re a wizard in real life. We are not talking here regarding training you in the art of conjuring, but rather regarding living some experiences very close to those experienced by your favorite characters at Hogwarts. Among them, we obviously find the visit to the reproductions of Hogsmeade or Crossroad in different Universal parks or the iconic site of the track 9 ¾ at King’s Cross station in London. But did you know that it was also possible to take a ride on the Hogwarts Express?

If you go to Scotlandyou can indeed board the Jacobite Steam Traina steam train that connects the cities of Fort William et Mallaig passing by a railway mounted on a viaduct in the middle of the Scottish countryside. While the craft in question isn’t actually called the “Hogwarts Express” in real life, just look at the photos above to see that the resemblance is nothing short of striking. Even better, the path he takes is none other than that taken by the Hogwarts Express and which can be seen in particular in the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. For all these reasons, this train has become an unmissable attraction for fans of the saga. However, it may well close its doors…
Soon the end of the Hogwarts Express?
With a steam train more than 120 years old, it was obvious that some safety standards would eventually become obsolete. This is unfortunately what happened to Jacobite Steam Trainwhose doors would no longer be up to standard according toOffice of Rail and Road (ORR). Following an inspection carried out last July, West Coast Railways (which operates the Jacobite Steam Train) was accused of putting its passengers at risk of serious injury. She must therefore carry out major work to restore and modernize the doors of the steam train, which would cost no less than £7 million (around 10 years of profits according to the WCR).

Following a challenge from West Coast Railways, a temporary exemption has been granted for the company, but this would end today, November 30, 2023. While the tourist attraction still attracts around 750 people a day in peak season (not including those just watching the train in the surrounding countryside), the Jacobite Steam Train might therefore face the end of its journey unless until they agree to carry out the repairs. The case is now in the hands of British justice which should soon decide whether the train can restart or not.
