BIM, Your Rights at Stake: The Campaign to Raise Awareness and Access to BIM Status

The Cultural Presence and Action movement and Solidaris launched their campaign “BIM, your rights at stake“, intended to raise awareness of the status of Beneficiary of Increased Intervention, but also to highlight the different causes of non-recourse to rights and its consequences for citizens and for society as a whole.

Today, nearly 2.2 million people benefit from BIM status in our country. It is estimated that 300,000 people do not actually benefit from this status even though they are eligible for access. Which represents 12% of total beneficiaries“, explained François Perl, director of the social actor and citizen division of Solidaris, and Pierre Vangilbergen, campaign manager with the PAC.

Increasing the income ceiling by 10% would allow a greater number of these workers to benefit from the conditions that the BIM status would grant them“, they added. In numerical terms, this increase would increase the income ceiling from 25,797.56 euros gross taxable (increased by 4,775.84 euros per dependent in the household) to 28,377.31 euros gross taxable ( increased by 5,253.42 euros per dependent in the household).

A new important step in the automatic granting of BIM status was reached on November 14. From April 1, 2024, the opening of the status will be automatic for people who are unemployed and/or incapacitated for more than three months as well as for people recognized as disabled. This automation will impact around 60,000 people in Belgium. The PAC and Solidaris estimate that this might reduce the rate of non-use of BIM status by 20%.
