As if it wasn’t bad enough that a child was born sick, the suffering becomes even greater when no one helps. This is exactly where the Steyr association Allianz für Kinder has been helping for 33 years: young patients from Albania, Kosovo and the Republic of Moldova are brought to Austria for life-saving operations. This would not be possible in their home country because there is a lack of appropriately trained doctors, adequately equipped hospitals and medication. “Illnesses that are routinely cured in this country still have serious consequences in these countries,” says Steyr doctor Michael Schodermayr, co-founder and medical director of the Alliance for Children.
One of the Allianz protégés was Valentin, now 20 years old. He was born with hydrocephalus and an open spinal cord. Mother and son went through hell until the then two-year-old ended up in the expert hands of Schodermayr. “If the deformity had not been treated, Valentin’s limbs would have weakened, the boy would have lost control of his urine, if he had not already died of an infection,” the doctor explains the urgent need for action. One thing is certain: Without the help of the Alliance for Children, Valentin would have succumbed to his suffering sooner or later.
To this day, the Alliance for Children has accompanied Valentin’s journey for many years – ensuring regular check-ups, further surgical procedures and ongoing care with disposable catheters. With success. Because what hardly anyone dared to hope at first came true. Valentin is alive and has grown into a healthy young man. Today he is studying law in the Albanian capital Tirana.
“Valentin is not an isolated case. Our help is still needed on Austria’s doorstep – often more than ever,” says Schodermayr. With individual medical assistance, the Steyr aid organization wants to give as many sick children as possible a chance for a healthy future. Since the association’s activities began, the Steyr aid organization has been able to provide more than 2,600 girls and boys with life-saving treatment and, as a result, a healthy future.
