The Brussels Minister of Climate, Alain Maron (Ecolo) welcomed the judgment of the Court of Appeal on Thursday. This judgment in the lawsuit brought by the non-profit organization Climat and 58,000 citizens alongside it once morest the federal State and the Regions “reinforces the fight led by the Brussels Region as president of the National Climate Commission so that Belgium achieves the European objectives of -55% in all sectors, thanks to a maximum contribution from each of the Regions and the additional efforts of the federal State“, commented Minister Maron in a press release.

According to it, for Brussels, this implies a commitment of -47% for non-ETS sectors. It is this European objective of -47% non-ETS that the Brussels-Capital Region has set itself as part of its contribution to the National Energy-Climate Plan. “Brussels is therefore doing its part and will continue its efforts. To achieve an ambitious intra-Belgian agreement, it is now important that the Flemish Region finally commits to raising its climate objectives, which will allow Belgium to commit to -55% in all sectors by 2030.“.

In the eyes of Alain Maron, “on this first day of COP 28, this judgment confirms that an ambitious course is absolutely necessary to fight once morest climate change and its effects on quality of life and health“. The Brussels Minister of Climate finally underlined that Brussels was on a positive trajectory in relation to the objectives, having already achieved until 2022 a reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions of -30% since 2005 (Flanders, -17 %; Wallonia, -19%).
