Nick Martinez, a pitcher who once played for Nippon Ham and SoftBank, has performed well in his return to the major leagues in the past two years. He is suitable as a starter and reliever for the San Diego Padres. Today (30th) it was reported that he will be offered a two-year contract of US$26 million (approximately NT$810 million) to the Cincinnati Reds. The contract comes with a player option, and Martinez can enter the free agent market once more following next year’s season.

The 33-year-old Martinez was promoted to the major leagues in 2014. He played for the Texas Rangers in the first four seasons, playing 88 games, 68 starts, 17 wins and 30 losses, and an ERA of 4.77. In 2018, he moved to Nippon Ham. Then transferred to SoftBank, played 23 games, had 10 wins and 5 losses, and an ERA of 1.62, opening the door to returning to the major leagues as expected.

In March 2022, Martinez signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract with the Padres, with player options attached for three consecutive years. After the end of last year’s season, the two sides re-signed a three-year, $26 million contract, which also came with options. After two years, Martinez played 110 games, starting 19 games, with 10 wins, 8 losses and 9 saves, and an ERA of 3.45, which made his value rise once more in the free agent market.

The Reds’ starting pitching team’s ERA this year is as high as 5.43, ranking 28th in the major leagues, only better than the Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies. After Martinez joins the Redskins, he is expected to enter the starting five rotation at the beginning of next year. Hunter Greene and Andrew Abbott are confirmed candidates for the rotation, Nick Lodolo is also one as long as he is healthy, and Graham Ashcraft is the No. 5 candidate.
