The inclusive online platform “another hand” plans to publish a magazine in simple language from March 2024. There are many people who don’t understand conventional journalism and wouldn’t even consider buying a newspaper. The magazine is therefore an “important project in terms of democratic policy,” said “another hand” managing director Clara Porak in an interview with the APA.

The plan is to print at least 40,000 copies and make them available to social organizations throughout Austria. These are intended to distribute the magazine in workshops, homes or refugee accommodation. “We are bringing the magazine to where the target group is,” says Porak. The first two editions can be financed in part through innovation funding from the business agency. archyde news should finance the rest. Each issue should contain two to three exclusive stories and other articles that have already been published online. As in the online sector, the focus is on uncovering grievances surrounding disability, explaining disability and showing what barrier-free journalism means in this area.

Since it was founded, people with and without physical or mental disabilities have been working together journalistically at “another hand”. “I can proudly say that we are doing a very good job,” said Porak. Over 1,000 people have now taken out a subscription. However, another 400 supporters are needed to maintain current operations. This is one of the reasons why the magazine, which is largely financed by , should be added as a further financial source of support. “If subscriptions and magazines work, ‘on the other hand’ is doing well. If one of them works, ‘on the other hand’ survives. If neither of them works, we will definitely die,” Porak outlined possible scenarios.

In the past few days, over 100 new supporters have been added, which is probably also due to research carried out together with “Dossier”. The two media outlets evaluated a data set that shows which companies paid compensation taxes in 2020 instead of employing people with disabilities in the company. The political parties were also scrutinized.

However, the greatest attention to date has been achieved by “another hand” with a documentary published last year that critically dealt with “Light in the Dark”. The result was a round table at ORF and an adapted gala the following year.
