How many are the fine arts?

Surely we have all heard it said on many occasions that cinema is the seventh art, as if there were only seven fine arts.

The concept of cinema as a seventh art was coined at the beginning of the 20th century, when cinema was booming and becoming a popular form of art and entertainment around the world and many critics and thinkers of the time began to debate regarding it. whether cinema should be considered an art form or not. Already in the 1930s, the Italian film critic Ricciotto Canudo, the most important at the time, gave a conference in which he proclaimed that cinema was the “seventh art,” thus joining the six traditional arts.

How many fine arts were there before the appearance of cinema, which, without a doubt, is an art, six or were there already seven? Of course painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance and literature already existed. However, some put theater instead of dance.

Let’s go a little further. Isn’t singing an art or, if you prefer, an artistic expression? And if we consider that cinema is an art, shouldn’t we add photography to this list? Photography is an art, since it expresses a personal vision, in addition to capturing unique and unrepeatable moments or situations and expressing one or more ideas through the image. In fact, technically, cinema is a succession of photographs (frames) that ultimately tell a story.

Therefore, if we add to all these artistic expressions, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance, theater, singing, literature, photography and cinema, the fine arts would be ten.
