Citizens’ wallets still face a formidable adversary: inflation. This is increasingly eroding the purchasing power of the Tunisian consumer who rebels, daily, at the high prices of foodstuffs and others. This inflation is due to multiple exogenous factors such as supply chain disruptions, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to a shortage of certain products and a sharp increase in the prices of basic necessities, as well as increased demand in certain sectors. For some, this is a matter of poor market management punctuated by disorder and the control of speculators. Others remain expectant and are in favor of rigorous control of the circuit, the organization of the distribution circuit of goods and for the implacable fight once morest bureaucracy. Public authorities are invited to regulate prices and bring them in line with the purchasing power of households, which is shrinking dramatically. To mitigate the effect of inflation on the purchasing power of households, the Ministry of Trade and Export Development has just announced a series of measures intended to control the prices of certain unregulated products and to freeze prices of certain food products such as canned goods, biscuits and pastries, soft drinks and juices, as well as dairy products. The same measure will apply to household cleaning products, health products and construction materials. At the same time, he announced the capping of cooperation services between producers and distributors at 5 to 10% of turnover depending on the regime (free or regulated). It is necessary to remember that The Head of State, Kais Saïd, has made the protection of citizens’ purchasing power his main focus. As such, he waged a merciless war on food speculators, with sentences ranging up to life imprisonment.
Although inflation has been on a downward trend since October, price levels still remain high, particularly those of foodstuffs. Today, the cost of living is not a simple statistic, but a tangible experience for many households, forced to juggle their budget and market fluctuations while desperately seeking ways to maintain a certain financial balance.
