Kozhikode: Prominent Hyderabadi Qawwali singers Warsi brothers will visit Kozhikode tomorrow. They are coming as part of the inauguration of the Malabar Literature Festival. This is the first time that they have performed many qawwali sadas in India and abroad. The program is tomorrow at 8 pm.
Warsi Brothers was formed by Nasir Ahmad Khan Warsi and Nasir Ahmad Khan Warsi from Hyderabad. Hailing from a prominent family of Qawwali-Ghazal tradition, the Warsi brothers are the grandsons of Qawwali singer Aziz Ahmad Khan Warsi, who was honored with the Padmasee by the country. Their father Zaheer Ahmad Khan Warsi is also a famous qawwali singer.
The Warsi brothers, who started learning music from their grandfather, mainly sing the Sufiana Kalams of Amir Khusru. Apart from these, the poems of famous Sufi poets Ghalib, Meera and Kabir are also sung.
In 2014, the Telangana government honored them with the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for their contribution to Qawali music. A large number of music lovers flock to the famous Yusufine Dargah in Nampally, Hyderabad to attend the Qawwali Sadas performed by the Warsi Brothers on Thursday nights.
The Warsi brothers said that Kerala is a land of great acceptance for Qawwali-Ghazal music and they are very happy to sing in Kerala for the first time. ‘Qawali is a precious asset that has been handed down to us. There is no great joy in traveling across the country as its propagandists,’ said the Warsi brothers.
From November 30 to December 3, the first edition of the Malabar Literature Festival will be held on the Kozhikode waterfront. A number of writers and social activists from within and outside Kerala will participate in the four-day festival celebrating Malabar’s history, art, culture and historic international ties.
