“In reality, it’s not the tree we asked for,” confides John Adama, festival alderman of the municipality of Oudenaarde, to our colleagues at Het Laatste Nieuws. Last week, the municipality of East Flanders installed its Christmas tree on the square before decorating it. However, the conifer did not appeal to the residents.
The trees will be more expensive this year… but of excellent quality!
”It was a two-trunked tree, although we had ordered a single-trunked one. But as we had promised the Oudenaarde traders that the tree would already be installed as part of an event, we no longer had time to change” explains John Adama. The branches of the tree broke during transport, revealing holes in its structure. Despite the decorations, walkers mightn’t help but notice that the tree was leaning, giving it the nickname “Tower of Pisa”. He was finally relieved on Tuesday.
This is not the first year that the Oudenaarde Christmas tree has gone through some twists and turns, as the alderman recounts: “Usually our tree receives nothing but praise for its absolutely magnificent decorations, but this time it was crooked. It seems like our Christmas tree is cursed, because it happens almost every year.”
