Cali, November 2023. Three girls and seven boys between 3 and 16 years old who lack part of their upper extremities are the beneficiaries of Generación Superhéroes, a social campaign promoted by Coomeva Prepaid Medicine whose objective is to provide them with a prosthesis to help them improve their quality of life. The children come from various regions of Colombia and had been on the waiting list for months to get a prosthesis.
The 10 cases were selected from hundreds of children who, due to birth or some trauma, lack part of one of their upper limbs. This is the case of Simón, a little boy from Pereira, only 6 years old, who was born with agenesis of his left arm, a rare disease that causes congenital anomalies in the extremities. This defect is described as “limb reduction” and implies that an upper or lower limb is reduced in size or missing completely. In Colombia, it is estimated that an average of 300 children are born each year with this condition.
According to Coomeva Medicina Prepagada, the type of agenesis that Simón has does not pose any risk to his life, but it may imply difficulties in the normal development of his motor skills; need for assistance with activities of daily living; limitations in making certain movements or participating in certain physical activities, and possible emotional and social problems due to physical appearance.
Thanks to the Generation Superheroes campaign, Simón will be able to access his first prosthesis, which will allow him to have better physical stability and do things that are difficult for him now, although, in reality, he is self-sufficient for almost all daily tasks, including playing games. football or tying shoelaces. “We knew regarding Simón’s condition since the pregnancy, but we have never let that limit him,” says Erica, his mother. On a day-to-day basis, we have worked on his security and self-love so that he is an independent child and that he is never ashamed of being who he is.” The mother is very grateful for the opportunity opened by Generación Superhéroes because, without that help, it would have been very difficult to access the prosthesis. “We know that it will be essential for my son to have a full life.”
To access the prosthesis, Simón has gone through several phases. His case was first evaluated by a board of specialists that includes physiatrists, occupational therapists, and orthotics and prosthetics experts. The board decided on the rehabilitation plan and the type of prosthetic device suitable for him. With this, the prosthesis was manufactured with a modern 3D printing system and left ready for the final process: painting and decorating it in a personalized way according to the user’s instructions. In Simón’s case, the design is inspired by his favorite superhero: Spider-Man.
For this entire process, Coomeva Medicina Prepagada has had the support of Fabrilab, a non-profit entity that is an expert in the development of prosthetic devices and rehabilitation.
“There is no better way to celebrate our 50 years than by helping new generations achieve their dreams. That is the essence of Generación Superhéroes: celebrating in a different way and honoring our cooperative and supportive nature,” comments Marco Montes, general manager of Coomeva Medicina Prepagada.
