Weather for 2 weeks: How long will the snow and cold last? Be careful of snow and ice on the Sea of Japan side over the weekend
November 29, 2023 11:54
There are places on the Sea of Japan side where snowfall will increase further over the weekend, and there are places in Hokkaido with heavy snowfall. Roads can become slippery due to snow and ice, so caution is required when driving. Even on the sunny Pacific side, the air is cold, which is typical of December. Next Tuesday, a low pressure system will move along the southern coast of Honshu, bringing widespread rain.
Thursday, December 30th to Wednesday, December 6th Snow and cold continue into the weekend
Even stronger cold air will move in tomorrow, the 30th (Thursday). The cold air will reach its peak until December 1st (Friday), and the cold air that will cause snow to fall on the plains is expected to reach the southern Tohoku region, and the cold air that will cause snow to fall on the mountains will move south as far as Kyushu. In the past, even when it got cold, it was temporary, but the key point this time is that the cold will continue into the weekend.
Tomorrow, the 30th (Thursday), there will be heavy snowfall in some places in Hokkaido, mainly on the Sea of Japan side. Although the peak of the wind has passed, we still need to be careful regarding traffic disruptions caused by heavy snow. The severe cold continues, and there is a possibility that Sapporo will be in the middle of winter on the 30th (Thursday) and 1st (Friday). From the 2nd (Saturday) onwards, the snow will stop in many places, and the cold will ease somewhat.
In Tohoku, snow will continue on the Sea of Japan side, and the sunny Pacific side will continue to be cold until the 2nd (Saturday). Hokuriku also experiences heavy rain, and the temperature does not rise much during the day. It will be sunny in many places from Kanto to Kyushu, but it will be cold due to the cold air on the Sea of Japan side. There are places in the mountains where it snows, so please be careful of changing road conditions when driving on mountain passes. The December-like cold will continue until the 2nd (Saturday), and it will get even colder in the morning. It looks like there will be many places where the temperature will drop enough to cause frost, even in the plains.
Next week on the 5th (Tuesday), a low pressure system will move along the southern coast of Honshu, bringing rain over a wide area.
Frozen road surfaces Areas to be especially careful regarding
Road surfaces that are wet from snow or rain can freeze when the temperature drops. In particular, there are four areas where you need to be careful regarding frozen roads:
(1) On top of bridges and pedestrian bridges, the heat from the ground is difficult to transfer and there is good ventilation, so it is easy to freeze. Especially when it’s blustery, the wind is stronger than other places, visibility is poor, and it’s easy to freeze, so it’s quite dangerous.
(2) The road surface conditions may differ greatly between inside and outside the tunnel. At the entrance and exit of the tunnel, drive at a slow speed to avoid suddenly taking the steering wheel due to the icy road surface.
(3) It is important to slow down sufficiently before approaching intersections and curves. If you press the brake while turning the steering wheel, it will become very slippery. Also, when accelerating, make sure to complete the intersection or curve before stepping on the accelerator.
(4) Once the road surface freezes in the shade, it takes time to completely melt. Please be careful when walking along paths that are likely to be shaded, such as on the north side of buildings.
7 (Thursday) – 12 (Tuesday) Weather not refreshing on the Sea of Japan side
From the 7th (Thursday) onward, clouds will likely spread from Hokkaido to Tohoku on the Sea of Japan side, and there may be days when it snows or rains. It looks like there will be many cloudy and rainy days from Hokuriku to the San’in region. It is expected that there will be many sunny days in various parts of the Pacific coast and Kyushu.
Both the minimum and maximum temperatures are at or above normal, so it doesn’t seem to be very cold. However, on days when it is sunny and radiative cooling is strong, it will be colder in the morning and the temperature difference between daytime and daytime will be large. It might be a good idea to adjust it by layering.
