The 21st International Circus Festival: A Spectacular Event at Palais des Sports de Grenoble

Great show in perspective! For four days, from Thursday November 30 to December 3, the Palais des sports de Grenoble transforms into a giant circus tent pour the 21st edition of the International Circus Festival. Like every year, acrobats from all over the world will perform in front of 12,000 spectators. This year, there will be a total of 60 artists, from 14 different countries, performing balancing acts, juggling or performing many pirouettes. But before that, they must rehearse, accompanied by an orchestra and an impressive light show.

A specialized orchestra accompanies the artists

The orchestra remains a major element of the show. And it’s not just any orchestra! As for the last three editions, it is that of Pierre Pichaud, conductor of the Paris Circus Orchestra, which will provide support to the artists. These musicians are used to playing for the Cirque d’hiver Bouglione, in Paris. Although Pierre is experienced, playing for circus artists is always a thrilling challenge.

Up to 12,000 spectators expected

An orchestra that Daria, 21 years old, and Valeriia Davydenko, 18 years old, must tame, two Ukrainian acrobatic sisters who have lived in France for three years. “Sometimes musicians play too fast or too slow. This time they weren’t playing loud enough for me to hear the musical cues. It’s these cues that let me know when I need to do a trick.”explains Daria, the eldest whose mother is the coach.

Pierre Pichaud is well aware of this: the role of music is essential in the acrobats’ numbers but, paradoxically, it can stress artists more than support them. “Simply because they think we’re working a little in the air,” he explains. “So it’s up to us to prove to them that we can listen and be very professional.” And therefore take a weight off their shoulders. Up to 12,000 spectatorss are expected at the Palais des sports over the four days of the event to enjoy the 22 acts on the program.
