Kerala Governor’s Decision: Sending 7 Bills to President for Approval

Thiruvananthapuram ∙ Governor Arif Muhammad Khan has decided to send the 7 bills passed by the Legislative Assembly including the bill to curtail the powers of the Lokayukta and 2 bills to remove the governor from the post of chancellor of universities for the approval of the President. The Governor approved the Public Health Bill. The decision was taken today while the Supreme Court is considering the case filed by the state government once morest the governor stating that it is not taking a decision on these 8 bills. This is the first time in history that 7 bills are being sent to the President together.

An amendment bill to reduce the powers of the Lokayukta, 2 University Amendment Bills to remove the Governor from the post of Chancellor, a Bill to increase the number of members of the Search Committee for selection of Vice-Chancellors, a Bill to give voting rights to administrators of milk co-operative societies, a retired judge to be appointed by the Governor instead of a sitting District Judge as a University Appellate Tribunal from a panel provided by the High Court. 2 University Act Amendment Bills are being sent to the President for appointing Govt.

The Supreme Court had criticized the Governors’ indefinite detention of bills passed by the Assembly. The court directed the Kerala Governor’s Additional Chief Secretary to read the verdict criticizing the Punjab Governor. Raj Bhavan’s decision is to inform the Supreme Court that the Governor has taken a decision on important bills. The decision on the bills was taken by postponing the governor’s trip to Delhi yesterday.
