After being behind for a long time, Paris Saint-Germain snatched a draw once morest Newcastle (1-1) on a last-minute penalty this Tuesday during the fifth day of the Champions League groups. Paris will have to win in Dortmund to qualify for the eighth by finishing first in their group.

The first minute of play, with two tumbles from Lee Kang-In on the left side of the area set the tone: PSG was there to take revenge following the heavy defeat of the first leg (1-4).

Unfortunately for Kylian Mbappé’s partners, Newcastle took advantage of a rare opportunity to score and put Paris in great difficulty until the scorer equalized on a penalty in the last moments of the match (1-1). Before the last day and a perilous trip to Dortmund, Paris keeps its destiny in its hands to dream of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Donnarumma undermined PSG’s ambitions

Effective in pressing, Paris initially seemed capable of quickly suffocating its opponent… in vain. Luis Enrique’s men put themselves in danger on their own. On a back pass that was a bit too strong from Achraf Hakimi, “Gigio” Donnarumma put it back on the Moroccan who was moved by Anthony Gordon.

Fortunately for Paris, this double error from the full-back was not punished by a goal from the Magpies, Alexander Isak’s shot not finding the target. Problem, following this first alert, the Ile-de-France block continued to move back and left the ball to the Newcastle players for around ten minutes.

On a curled shot from Miguel Almiron, Gianluigi Donnarumma limply diverted the ball into the feet of Alexander Isak. This time, the Swede was quick to score the first goal of the match (0-1, 24th).

Skriniar does well before the break

After the opening score, PSG tried to react but too timidly. Above all, the Ile-de-France attackers lacked precision in their attempts. And on a counter at the end of added time, Milan Skriniar deprived Alexander Isak of a face-to-face with Gianluigi Donnarumma thanks to a superb return… where the Slovak lightly (and involuntarily) touched the ball with his arm falling to the ground.

An action where Szymon Marciniak did not whistle or expel the Parisian defender. The VAR did not see fit to intervene. A question of interpretation which prevented the Parisians from playing the entire second half numerically inferior.

Paris has long been ruined

Trailing at the break and temporarily third in Group F, PSG regained possession of the ball following returning from the locker room. Coming into play on the hour mark, Vitinha and especially Bradley Barcola brought more movement to the Parisian offensives.

The former OL player, on two beautiful offerings from Kylian Mbappé, came very close to equalizing. But following scoring from close range on Nick Pope, the 21-year-old winger missed the target.

After these two big chances, Achraf Hakimi was unbalanced in the Magpies area but the VAR intervention did not result in a penalty in favor of the leader of Ligue 1. Rebelote a few moments later where a slight English hand n was not whistled (0-1, 72nd). Kylian Mbappé then failed once morest a great Nick Pope.

But on a final action in the English area, the ball hit Livramento’s hand. If the leather first touched the defender’s stomach, the VAR invited the referee to look at the sequence which resulted in the penalty being awarded. In force, Kylian Mbappé transformed (1-1, 90th + 8). A goal that diametrically changes things for Paris.

Paris master of its destiny in Dortmund

On arrival, PSG conceded a draw on Tuesday and still have a chance of finishing at the top of their group. Already qualified following its success in Milan (1-3), the BvB will host Paris on December 13, in a match where the Ile-de-France residents will play for their future in the Champions League.

To qualify for the round of 16 of the Champions League and finish first in the group, Paris will absolutely have to win in Germany. In the event of a draw for Lucas Hernandez’s teammates, they will qualify if Newcastle do not win at St James’ Park once morest Milan.

Bad news, Ousmane Dembélé will be suspended for the match once morest Dortmund following receiving a yellow card for a gesture of humor once morest Newcastle.

But beware of a defeat in the Ruhr since for the first time since the takeover by Qatar, Paris Saint-Germain can still be eliminated from the Champions League in the groups.
