Sydney: Australia will ban the import of disposable vapes from January 1, the government announced yesterday. It will also introduce new laws to prevent the manufacture, advertisement and distribution of single-use vapes in the country. The law comes as a prelude to a complete ban on recreational vaping. Marketing vaping as a way to quit smoking has become a trend among young people. But Australia’s health minister said “the new generation has become more dependent on nicotine”.
Vapes or e-cigarettes are lithium battery-powered devices that contain liquids containing nicotine, artificial flavors, and many other chemicals. From 2021 it will be illegal to buy or import any Australian e-cigarettes or nicotine vapes without a doctor’s prescription. But despite these restrictions, the price of nicotine is skyrocketing.
A University of Sydney study earlier this year found that a quarter of teenagers aged 14-17 drank alcohol, while nine in 10 Australian teenagers of the same age had easy access to nicotine vaping.
In May, the Australian government looked at plans to phase out the use of single-use vapes, but nothing came of it. It was only later that the authorities came to this strict control.
