Updating an application loved by users can always be a traumatic moment, especially when it brings a radical change to the interface and functionality. Although it promises useful new features and functions, there are times when the new features are so poorly received that users start looking for other alternatives. That appears to be what’s happening with Plex’s November update.

What is Plex TV?

Plex is a streaming service that also allows you to use it as a multimedia center

O Plex emerged as a free streaming service that includes films, series and live TV shows. But to become a differentiator, the platform also started to make software available Plex Media Server, allowing users to create a personal content server and use media players compatible with different devices, such as TVs, computers, video games and cell phones. Despite not offering newly released series or live broadcasts of major open TV events, most of the content comes from free sources.

Additionally, the service offers paid features such as access to premium content, sharing libraries with friends, and downloading files for offline playback. As for compatibility, Plex supports a variety of devices, including computers with Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems, mobile devices iOS e Android, smart TVs from brands such as Samsung, LG, Sony, as well as consoles of games such as PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Where did everything change?

Plex decided to take the next step by bringing a major update that introduced something new that no one asked for: an integrated social network. Among the possibilities, by creating a Plex account, users might share what they are watching with their friends and even organize remote viewings, so that everyone can watch the same film on different devices, but simultaneously.

The new and controversial feature is called Discover Togetherand includes a tab Activity which allows you to see what your friends are doing on Plex, such as watching a football match, a movie or binge-watching a series, and can also report you if you are watching pornography. And that’s not the end: as if that weren’t enough, in addition to revealing content in real time, Plex also sends an email with the week’s activity.

The official Plex and Reddit forums are full of users complaining that they are discovering everything their friends do, including sensitive and private content. There are already many users threatening to stop using the platform.

How to solve

New Plex feature lets your friends know everything you’re doing on the platform

So far, Plex has not commented on the controversy. The good news is that you can disable the feature and stop Plex from automatically sharing what you’re watching. To do this, do the following:

Access the Plex official website and log in with your account; In the side menu, access the settings; Click on the option Privacy Options;
Em My playback historyswitch to the option Private (By default, it’s on “Friends Only”). click in To save for the changes to be applied.

Ready! From now on, Plex won’t share what you’re watching with your friends.
