Seventeen-day long rescue mission in Uttarkashi Silkyara tunnel is a success. 41 workers who were trapped in the under construction tunnel and faced death for three weeks were successfully brought out. Union Minister V.K. Singh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami received together.

Cheers erupted outside the tunnel as the workers came out. The locals shared the sweets and shared the joy. After the disaster management personnel entered the tunnel with stretchers, they were brought out one by one. After being carried on stretchers, the workers were brought out in an ambulance.

The rescue workers had instructed the relatives of those trapped in the tunnel to be ready. The mission was given a new lease of life when the drilling machine stuck in the pipe was pulled out yesterday morning. After that, the rescue workers who moved through the pipe started to remove the iron and steel layers from the debris in the tunnel using gas cutters.

The workers were brought out safely following 16 days of the accident. On November 12, Diwali day, the tunnel collapsed and the workers were trapped. Since then, 41 people have returned to life at the end of the rescue operations which have been carried out without a moment’s break.

The critical phase of the extremely difficult rescue operation was completed using an American-made Auger machine. But within days the auger machine broke down. With this, apart from machine-assisted drilling, rat hole mining was adopted. Apart from this, vertical drilling was also done.

As soon as the workers were trapped, they were able to get the food, water, medicine and oxygen they needed. These were delivered by inserting a six-inch diameter pipe. They were also provided with the means to talk to rescuers and family members.

Silkara is a four-and-a-half kilometer long tunnel being built on National Highway 134 as part of the Chardham project. The construction cost of the tunnel is Rs 1119.69 crore. Including land acquisition and rehabilitation, the total cost would be Rs 1383.78 crore. The construction period is four years.
