Nearly 300 TUI passengers were stranded in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, since Thursday. Some of them were able to return to Brussels on Monday, but others are still stuck in the Caribbean, according to RTLInfo.
Some passengers were stopping in Punta Cana on their way to Jamaica. At the time of the breakdown, they stayed at the airport until the evening in the hope of finding a plane that would allow them to reach Jamaica. Due to lack of a plane, they were put up in a hotel.
The spare parts brought in the next day were not enough to repair the broken plane. Staying at the airport for several days in a row hoping to board, the passengers were allegedly warned by TUI that a plane from another company might pick them up. According to a witness, the passengers remained at the airport until 2 a.m., without water or food provided. They ultimately had to return to the hotel empty-handed.
Passengers also have to change hotels regularly, conditions which are far from easing tensions. They also regret having lost five days of travel in this misadventure.
TUI, for its part, ensures that passengers will be able to reach Jamaica from Monday evening. They will also receive a refund of €600 and receive compensation for each day of vacation lost.
