Heartrot
(Dark Metal)
Label: Black Records
Format: (LP)
Release: 01.12.2023
Tomi Koivusaari, the driving and creative force behind it AMORPHISfollowing more than 30 years of band history, has decided to release his first solo album under the banner BJØRKØ to publish, has invited numerous guest singers and is extremely versatile.
It starts without further ado with the rough and heavy opener “The Heartroot Rots”, which features none other than CARCASS Fronter Jeff Walker causes a stir vocally. Nasty, thrashy riffs, a menacing atmosphere and barking vocals immediately provide the first highlight and you immediately notice that you can expect a lot here.
What is also noticeable regarding the second song “Vaka Loka” is that no two tracks are alike. In Finnish and by Addi Tryggvason (SOLSTAFIR) performed with fervor, it becomes darker and more modern. But it’s also a bit more in the direction of AMORPHIS, even if none of the songs mentioned would be imaginable in this form on any of the Finns’ previous albums. Nevertheless, with “Whitebone Wind” there is a kind of “What If…?”, so what if they hadn’t recruited Tomi Joutson a good 20 years ago, but continued to forego growls and opted for Marco Hietala (ex-NIGHTWISH) decided? And the result is magnificent. Delicate keys, interesting synths and an extremely haunting chorus are immediately convincing.
Things continue to be varied, as the dark and emotional “Värinvaihtaja” brings a gothic flair, and “World As Fire And Hallucination” brings with it a gothic flair CRADLE OF FILTH Feeling on, but it’s not Dani on the microphone here, but Shagrath (DARK CITIES) in the best manner and the dreamy “The Trickster” brings a few more folk elements, while Jessy Frey switches between harsh, thrashy vocals and lulling chants.
But colleague Joutson also appears on “Hooks In The Sky”. Here they are a little closer to the main band once more, but try to create their own atmosphere with organ sounds and big choirs. There’s no need to argue regarding the vocal performance here either, as only top singers are at work here. After the ballad-like “Magenta”, Tomi also looks back once more, because the instrumental features the controversial saxophone of Sakari Kukko, who once refined the AMORPHIS classic “Veil Of Sin”.
But it’s not just the singers who are absolute Champions League, Tomi, who sees the whole thing as more than just a solo project, has also collaborated instrumentally with Lauri Porra (STRATOVARIUS), Waltteri Väyrynen (OPETH) and Janne Lounatvouri (HIDRIA) put together a sensational team.
Long story short: BJØRKØ’s target group is broad, but both fans of AMORPHIS and the guest singers will have a lot of fun here. An absolute surprise that will keep me busy for a long time.
