PFAS Pollution in Liège: Municipal Council Adopts Motion and Latest Analysis Results

The Liège municipal council adopted a motion expressing concern regarding the dangers linked to PFAS and requesting a serious analysis of the presence of this pollutant on the Liège territory, particularly in distribution water.

“At my initiative, the mayors of the Liège metropolitan area contacted the minister and the various services concerned in order to obtain precise information on the quality of the distribution water. The CILE communicated the results of the analyzes already carried out and those “These are reassuring. Thus, the rate for the municipality of Liège is 8 nanograms per liter, or more than 10 times lower than the European standard which will soon come into application”, specified the mayor.

He nevertheless indicated that it is necessary to be concerned regarding the environmental problem linked to the discharge by certain companies of wastewater contaminated with PFAS or to the presence of these contaminants in the soil linked to industrial activity. Thus, worrying data have been released concerning the discharge water from the waste management company Renewi in Wandre. The municipal college of the city of Liège has also issued a conditional opinion as part of the request for extension of the said company.

Thus, the mayor of Liège has decided to summon the company’s managers so that they can present the measures they intend to take to resolve these two problems mentioned. In addition, the City will contact the Region in order to obtain useful information regarding the importance of PFAS discharges and contamination linked to industrial activity in Liège. In the case of worrying information, the City will ask the Region to immediately impose strict measures.
