Many Belgians cross the border to go to French supermarkets when doing their Christmas shopping. The reason ? The difference between Belgian and French prices is enormous, according to a comparative study carried out by The Latest News on around fifty specific products in Auchan and Colruyt supermarkets.
One of the products affected by this difference is the water bottle. The Flemish media estimated that a one-liter bottle of Evian, for example, is sold for 0.66 euros in France, compared to 0.95 euros here. “It is no coincidence that Perrier, Evian and other Vittels are originally French brands, and on their national market, their mutual competition naturally lowers sales prices. And for Belgians, it is of course advantageous to get water from our neighbors,” explains Stefan Van Rompaey, retail expert interviewed by our colleagues.
Another example: soft drinks. A liter of Coca-Cola Zero sells for 1.24 euros at Auchan, compared to 1.83 euros at Colruyt. A gap which can be explained by the absence of a tax on sugar in France. Consequence: sugary foods and soft drinks cost less.
Another notable difference: the champagnes. A Pommery Brut Royal sold for 40.99 euros at Colruyt compared to 33.25 euros at Auchan, a price difference of 19%. “This difference is explained by the excise duties on alcohol which are much higher in Belgium,” explains the retail expert.
Differences which, however, have their limits: if peppers cost 3.99 euros per kilo in France, here, they are only 2.99 euros at Colruyt. Similar observation for bulk carrots, mushrooms and even iceberg lettuce which cost significantly more at Auchan. “This price difference can be explained by the fact that Colruyt managed to conduct very good negotiations with its Belgian vegetable suppliers,” emphasizes Stefan Van Rompaey.
