Since Wolfgang Schüssel’s infamous statement as Foreign Minister: “Tietmeyer is a…”, a terrible insult that he then denied having said, the political lie has become established in Austria. That was in the late 1990s. A lineage of politicians of all stripes have now used this dishonorable form of using untruths to evade prosecution or to generate a supposed party-political advantage.
Since the turquoise-blue and consequently also the turquoise-green coalition, a number of politicians, primarily ÖVP, have gained a dubious reputation with bold lies, even before state bodies. Judicial (preliminary) investigations and pending lawsuits show a questionable moral picture. Latest examples: National Council President Sobotka denies having been involved in postal fraud in favor of the ÖVP; a court is investigating suspicions of abuse of office. Mr. Sobotka’s alleged interventions in legal proceedings once morest ÖVP party and government members are current and particularly precarious. Not true, he says, the parliamentary opposition is telling untruths.
As the highest democratic representative of the Austrian Parliament, as someone who should have an unshakable role model and honor, he is putting our republic in a dubious democratic imbalance. A partisan without decency in the second highest office in the state must be replaced immediately by a venerable representative of our reasons of state.
