A new earthquake shook the municipality of El Carmen, Santander, around 5:00 am this Monday, November 27. According to the report of the Colombian Geological Service, it had a magnitude of 3.0 and a depth of 113 kilometers.

Although this earthquake was the most powerful recorded this morning, it was not the only one. Follow the latest recorded tremors here, according to the Colombian Geological Service:

Why is it shaking so much in Colombia?

According to the Colombian Geological Service, Colombia is a very seismically active country, as there are different tectonic plates that are in contact and this causes earthquakes to be generated in most of the territory. However, the most seismically active places in the country are the coasts and around the mountain ranges.

On its web portal, the Colombian Geological Service shares some keys to understand these common phenomena in the national territory. Keep in mind:

1. In the country there are 2,500 earthquakes a month, but most are not of relevant magnitude or intensity, so they become imperceptible.

3. Where a large earthquake has already occurred, it is very likely that it will occur once more in the future.

4. Aftershocks (seismic movements following an earthquake, of smaller magnitude than this one and occurring in the same region) generally occur in superficial earthquakes, which are generated less than 30 kilometers from the ground.

5. The effects that an earthquake can have on the infrastructure of a place and, therefore, on people, depends, among other things, on the relationship between its magnitude and depth. The greater the magnitude and the shallower the depth, the greater the impact there will be.

7. There is still no scientifically proven method that allows predicting earthquakes. For this reason, we must prepare to minimize its impacts and having earthquake-resistant constructions is the best way to do so.
