Called “Holiday Camp in the United Kingdom”, schools named Taunton, Whitgift, Sedbergh, Queen Ethelburga´s and The Mount School York open their doors in July and August 2024, for children aged 8 to 17 from Angola and other countries, in order to participate in holidays lasting up to six weeks
The head of Taunton school, Adrian Hall Worth, explained that her institution offers summer camps or boarding schools, providing a period of rest for new students that varies between two and six weeks. Participants will be divided by age group, with juniors aged between 7 and 12 years old, and seniors aged between 13 and 17. Adrian highlighted that the groups will benefit, per week, from 10 hours of English language classes, and around 13 dedicated to training in courses such as Scientific Research, Applied Mathematics, People and Places, and Creative Arts.
You can learn how to prepare food and create treats, including British cuisine and instruction in food hygiene. He clarified that, depending on the levels and ages of the students, they will have classes related to exploration, computer programming and robotics through scratch, flowol 4 and lego mindstorms.
The official also said that her institution is holding informative events for the fourth time in Luanda, and since 2015, in addition to the United Kingdom, several Angolan children have also participated in the holiday camp in Switzerland. “Last year, the Taunton school received nine Angolan children and they stayed at the institution for two weeks”, noted the head of the school located in South London, noting that having basic knowledge of English is one of the requirements for participation. Regarding the costs inherent to participation, she explained that these may vary depending on the activities, the registration period, the length of time the child is intended to be kept at school during the holidays, as well as the number of minors enrolled per family.
For his part, the representative of Sedbergh school, David Milner, highlighted that his institution welcomes students aged 8 to 17. Milner said that, at the last summer camp, there were 26 nationalities, including two Angolan children. In this school, unlike the previous one, the student is not necessarily required to have basic knowledge of English, since one of the institution’s main guidelines involves the development of the English language. Each week, students have two excursions to different cities including Manchester, Edinburgh, York, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, and local activities around the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, among others.
Queen Ethelburga’s welcomes students aged 7 to 17, and administers intensive general English, within a program that offers 10 hours per week, and more than 16 hours of elective options for seniors, which are business, science, art and sport. Meanwhile, extra activities include water sports, treasure hunts, fashion, cinema, forestry school, among others. Finally, The Mount school is aimed at girls aged 11 to 17. Its activities last three hours a day, ranging from sports, crafts, music, dancing, disco, swimming, tours and others. Classes last 22 hours per week. Topics include English culture, history, world geography, current affairs, public speaking projects and teamwork.
