Exchange with politicians from the ÖVP and the Greens on recommendations for action from the UN Committee of Experts on the Rights of People with Disabilities

Vienna (OTS) Austria ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008. Their implementation was completed in August 2023 as part of the State review of Austria by the UN Committee of Experts on the Rights of People with Disabilities checked once more. Major deficiencies and even regressions compared to the previous state audit were identified. The UN technical committee submitted in September 2023 critical recommendations for action to the state of Austria.

To date, the federal government has not initiated a structured process to implement these recommendations. The Austrian Council for People with Disabilities and its member organizations want to remind the representatives of the government parties of this in the run-up to the International Day of People with Disabilities.
The responsible politicians are being asked to finally present a detailed implementation plan. This is the only way to guarantee that the recommendations for action will be implemented by the next state review and that, through ratification, mandatory human rights will finally find their way into the reality of life for people with disabilities.
