ASPIRE’s grand challenger, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, the A2RL, has revealed its highly modified Super Formula SF23 development car for the first time. The first preview took place at the ASPIRE offices in Abu Dhabi, close to the world-famous Yas Marina Circuit, where the main event of the season – the 2023 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix – took place today. Globally acclaimed journalists representing the world’s most highly regarded automotive and racing publications were also present during the car’s spectacular unveiling, further solidifying the car’s status as a pioneer in the motorsport industry.
In April 2024, ten teams spanning North America, Europe, the UAE and Asia will duel to claim a share of the $2.25 million prize pool.
The series aims to accelerate the development and innovation of autonomous driving and push the technology forward for the eventual benefit of automobile safety in traffic and on the roads.
The new series makes best use of the innovative and incredibly fast Super Formula SF23 race car, developed by motorsport powerhouse Dalarra. All cars come equipped with a suite of sensors and control units, as well as a basic level of autonomous performance.
The self-driving car revealed today had just left the track, having completed a successful week of testing. Attendees were able to see how A2RL’s extensive testing program began to refine the SF23’s basic platform. This includes validating a suite of sensors, control modules and autonomous control software. Once completed, this basic platform will be made available to the ten teams participating in the inaugural A2RL race at the Yas Marina Circuit on April 28, 2024.
His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary-General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, parent body of ASPIRE, said: “This is a magnificent opportunity to utilize extreme sports as a basis for technical advancements. A2RL represents an investment that will contribute to the creation of an autonomous mobility ecosystem in Abu Dhabi, introducing safe deployment and encouraging OEM investment for widespread adoption, ultimately improving traffic and road safety.”
Stephane Timpano, CEO at ASPIRE, commented: “We are very happy to present the A2RL autonomous car to the media around the world. It was an incredible opportunity to discuss our recent developments and testing, whilst also highlighting the motivation and competitors behind the race. The A2RL will be the largest autonomous racing league in the world, shifting the focus from drivers to the engineers, scientists and programmers behind brilliant autonomous racing systems.”
The inaugural A2RL race will take place at the Yas Marina Circuit in April 2024.
